We need your support on an issue which most of us would've witnessed in our lives.
The NRI Marriage Fraud.. (Also known as 21 day marriage &/or the sham marriage)
Lately we lost one of our loved one after she committed suicide in the US due to constant harassment by her husband
(who by the way was her lover for 8 years before he went to the US 3 years back)
At the same time another close friend also attempted to kill herself for similar reasons.
We all have heard about the odd stories about how an NRI guy wooed this simple gal our family knew.. Married & then ditched for some reason or the other... There usually are three ways such marriages shape up:
- The guy would go back to send the girl's papers soon..(At some places.. keep the girl with his parents, so that they can get their visas claiming that they're leaving a family member behind to return to.. & when they go.. No one returns ever) Usually the girl by then is expecting to deliver also.. & then is left with the baby & her fate to never be able to remarry due to the social stigma or the legal fact that she's still LEGALLY married!!!
- The guy takes the girl along on an H4 visa (which by the way doesn't give the girl any legal rights in the US but DOES revoke her rights back home)Now upon reaching... The girl finds that the guy is already married & sometimes also has kids.. The girls passport & all are locked up.. she has no access to any mode of communication & no money too.. Usually she's not allowed to go out.. make friends etc.. All she's made to do is the household chores & there are times when she's thrown out of the house one strange night & basically abandoned! Sometimes to avoid trouble for himself.. the guy ensures that the first thing he does is get the girl to deliver a baby.. so that then, being of Indian traditional values she'd take the things easily. BASICALLY THIS WOMAN SPENDS ALL HER TIME AS A DOMESTIC HELP!!
- The guy would befriend the girl via Internet or sometimes via phone where its an arranged alliance. Thereafter.. come on a holiday for 21 days (that's the usual there)
- First week.. Meet & charm the girl.
- Second week... Plan for a Chat Mangni Pat Shaadi
- Third week.. Shadi & Honeymoon..
- THAT'S IT... He'd Go Back & Disappear..The girl would again be left with No choice for the rest of her life!
Of course there are stories that are the other way round too (Section 498-A of the IPC) where the girl married for the visa etc.. or Just some of those marriages that work!! But this is what usually happens!
Did you Know: According to one estimate, up to 20,000 women have been abandoned by their non-resident Indian (NRI) husbands every year.
NRI men abandoning wives is not a new phenomenon in the UK and US. It has been happening for over two decades now. But it’s surprising that despite still want to get their daughters married off to such men and girls themselves want to marry men abroad
